I Do Love Destiny.
I Love Destiny, there I said it, I love it with all my heart. Brilliant guns, solid game play, exciting PvP, gorgeous graphics “So why are you dumping it?” I hear you cry. Very simply because as much as I love this game it hates me back.
I did start writing a whole Destiny review the other day, filled with my love for it but also full of my gripes. I got to 900 words and realised that most readers would have given up the ghost long before I’d finished. So instead I had done a short (ish) video demonstrating my main problems.
If you like reading here they are in brief.
Rant Starts!!
I am a level 26 Hunter, Blade Dancer is fully upgraded and is devastating in PvP, I have brilliant high level legendary armour and a legendary shotgun that has been the downfall of many a guardian trying to steal my base in control.
However I have been stuck at level 26 for nearly 2 weeks because the leveling beyond 20 is a grinding, boring, frustrating, maddening, unrewarding mess!!!!!!! (sorry got a bit cross there)
Bloody Pointless Moon Grinding
To level my legendary chest, arm and leg armour to its highest level requires 192 helium filaments which can only be collected on the moon. I can get about 48 per hour if I do nothing else other than grind, meaning 4 hours of grinding in an area with mobs 20 levels below mine to be able to upgrade… Where’s the fun in that.
Ascendant Shards are Hard
Then I need ascendant shards 18 per item. These can only be obtained via random drops in raids or PvP. I have been playing since launch and I have had a total of 20 drop for me in that time!! I need 18 for each item already mentioned as well as my helmet (which needs spiritbloom from Venus not helium) 4 x 18 = 72. I have taken part in 136 crucible matches for 20 ascendant shards, meaning I will have to do a further 489.6 crucible matches to get what I need. 10 minutes per match = 81.6 hours. Really!!
Rant Ends
So why am I quitting… because Bungie and Activision punish you for loving their game, they don’t reward people for their effort (random loot drops will be one rant too far today) you put in the effort for no significant reward. If you are going to make people grind make it worth their while. I am not adverse to a bit of grinding, my favourite genre are PRG’s after all, but this is too much.
Goodbye Destiny, the good times were good but you are too high maintenance. I am off to be a Rogue in Final Fantasy XIV, because I love that game too, but more importantly, unlike you it loves me back!
