We are only four and a half months away from Christmas but there are still some great games to come before then. Here are the Top 5 Games I am definitely going to buy before Christmas.
Zombie Vikings (September 1st)
Zoink Games provided us with the insane point and click delights of Stick it to the Man last year. Their new project, Zombie Vikings is just as insane. Play Co-Op with up to 4 friends locally or online and beat the snot out of beasties and monsters as an undead Scandinavian warrior. The hack and slash gameplay looks huge amounts of fun and the dialogue is totally hilarious. You can vote now in the PS+ vote to play and if it wins we can get it for free (the best price ever) in September’s Instant Game Collection. You can use your own severed head as a weapon, come on what not to love!!
Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. (October 7th)
Anyone who follows my Facebook page knows that I am not a huge fan of remasters. However certain games defined last gen and demand a second look. Many PS4 players have either defected from X-Box or have PS4 as their first console. They haven’t sampled the delights of Naughty Dogs Epic series and I am more than happy to visit it again. Roughish treasure hunter Nathan Drake is a flawed, determined and funny companion and all 3 games, particularly Among Thieves, are breathtaking rides filled with wonder, brilliant set pieces and unforgettable characters. Awesome!
I’ve only played the original game on PS2 however it was a funny and irreverent game the tickled my funny bone as well as my tactical RPG buttons. The games are set in the underworld, the protagonists are generally loud uncouth teenage demons and the diversity and intricacy of the gameplay give 100s of hours of tactical combat. It is also totally bonkers; there are exploding penguin underlings and you can pick up your party and launch then across the map. Totally insane fun.
The only entry in the Fallout series I’ve played is number 3, it was huge, sprawling and epic (if a bit grey). Bethesda excel at this type of game and hopefully the PS4 release will avoid the buggy nonsense of its predecessor and distant relative Skyrim. The colour pallet has been massively increased and the weapon and customisation options seem extensive. The most welcome upgrade though is in the conversation system. You are no longer a mute reader of fixed text but a fully voiced participant that can listen to, walk away from or shoot in the face any character you come across. I expect to sink more hours into this than is good for me.
Although no firm release date has been announced a number of internet sources are saying that remastered versions of Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls are on their way before the end of the year. As I stated earlier in this post remasters are not my favourite thing and I couldn’t care less about Beyond which I found a little disappointing. Heavy Rain on the other hand is without a doubt one of my favourite PS3 games. Yes some of the voice acting is a little ropy and yes there are a couple of plot holes you could drive a bus through, however as a choice based, emotionally driven game I’ve not played better. This is a game where your choices really matter, if a character dies there’s no game over screen, the game just continues without their story and choices influencing the outcome. It is an intensely adult and very sombre game that affected me very deeply. Not for the faint hearted though.
The Top 5 Games I am going to buy before Christmas
So there are my Top 5 Games I am going to buy before Christmas. There are some big titles missing, I am not interested in Metal Gear or Assassin’s Creed and if No Man’s Sky had a 2015 release window it would have usurped Heavy Rain. But unless Sony have some big secrets up their sleeves that are announced in their Paris show or the PlayStation Experience, these games will definitely be finding their way onto my black slab of gaming goodness.
What are the games you are definitely getting before the Holiday Season is over? Let me know by commenting on this post or on my Facebook page.
All game release dates are subject to change so don’t blame me if some of them slip! As always remember it’s all for the love of games!
